They paved paradise and put in a parking lot

A new banner showed up on the Pier recently

Harper Pier is part of a SCUBA site. There are two shipwrecks, an anemone forest, and much more below the water out in front of the Pier.

Here’s Kitsap Transit’s rendering of their proposed ferry parking lot.

This community is involved, concerned, and is taking action!

It is GREAT that so many have taken time to express their thoughts and concerns about ferry moorage and maintenance at Harper Pier. We must keep expressing our concerns!

The next Kitsap Transit Board Meeting is this Tuesday, November 2nd.

8:30 - 10 AM
Zoom link here.
Public comments will be allowed at the end of the meeting.

The agenda, once again, does not list Harper Pier, which means we need to listen carefully during the “Exec. Director’s Items” to hear if John Clauson has taken action on the commitments he made during KT’s Harper Community Meeting earlier this month. The main commitment Clauson made: allocate funding for comparable studies of Clam Bay and Southworth.

It is time to send a letter or call in a voicemail!

We’re challenging ourselves to send in 50 notes/emails/voicemails before the board meeting.

Messages sent to the Board of Commissioners will be entered into the minutes of the meeting. Send yours now, and cc fohpier@gmail.com if you’d like! The deadline for public comment is Monday, November 1st @ 4:00 PM.

To leave a voicemail, call Jill Boltz at (360) 478-6230.

Prompts:

1.  What did you think of the community meeting held on October 13th? Were your questions answered?

2.  What do you think of the renderings of moored ferries that Kitsap Transit paid consultants to create?

3.  How will the proposed moorage impact your recreational use of the Pier?

4.  What concerns do you have about moorage at Harper Pier? The estuary?  The process?

5.  Do you have a better solution to offer to Kitsap Transit?

6. On what date will a Southworth feasibility study begin?

Public comments (community letters or recorded phone calls) are a direct way to express our concerns and suggestions to the Kitsap Transit Board of Commissioners. We need to keep our concerns in front of the Board. It is best if the letters are frequent and from a WIDE variety of Friends of Harper Pier. We need the squidders, SCUBA divers, walkers, birders, kayakers, photographers, etc to all write in. That includes YOU!

Op-eds and letters to the editor in the Kitsap Sun are another way to increase awareness.

If you’re new to writing elected officials or would just like some help writing your thoughts up, Tom Piscitelli would like to help. Just call him up (425-985-4534) or send him a message via Facebook. He’ll work with you to craft a compelling message about your concerns.

The Bremerton Sportsmen’s Club has sent a letter to representatives of their members and Kitsap Transit’s Board of Commissioners.

“It would seem to be a far better plan to locate this at Southworth. That existing Washington State Ferries Facility already has good parking, better ingress and egress, more security, more protection from wind and tides and would have far less impact on our ecosystem.” - Ron Flerx, President, Bremerton Sportsmen’s Club

Kinne Hawes wrote to the Port of Bremerton to remind them about our concerns.

“At this time, Kitsap Transit has NOT approached the Port with any proposal or offer to use, lease, or purchase the Harper Pier.” - Jim Rothin, CEO of Port of Bremerton

Are you interested in a yard sign? They’ll cost somewhere between $10-20.
